Your balcony door should work naturally with the way you live. Our team helps you bring the opening layout, glazing, threshold and mesh together in one coordinated design.
A balcony door connects two spaces with different conditions. Inside you have furniture, flooring and curtains; outside there may be rain, dust and a change in level. The best-looking drawing still needs to answer how people move through it every day.
Start with the usable passage
Measure the clear passage you need, not only the overall frame width. Ask the supplier to show the door fully open on a drawing. In a sliding arrangement, overlapping sashes can leave part of the overall width closed. In a hinged arrangement, the leaf needs swing clearance.
Check the path for carrying furniture and the position of outdoor chairs. A full-height opening that looks dramatic in a rendering may be awkward if the moving sash parks behind the wrong section.
Resolve the threshold before the floor is finished
Discuss the internal floor level, external finished level and how water will be managed at the junction. Request a section drawing of the proposed detail. Do not assume that every door can be installed with a flush threshold or that reducing a threshold will preserve the same weather performance.
Explain any accessibility needs early so the architect and installer can assess the whole route. Track height, clear width and adjoining levels must be considered together.
Include the insect screen in the design
Ask where the mesh sits, how it opens and how it will be cleaned. Confirm whether it affects the clear passage or adds another track. Compare the glass and mesh in their open and closed positions rather than treating the mesh as an unspecified accessory.
Four site details to photograph
- The full opening, including the sill and both side walls.
- The balcony floor and its drainage arrangement.
- Any overhead shelter and the exposed edge of the balcony.
- Nearby furniture, curtains, switches and other possible obstructions.
Specify operation and maintenance
Try a sample with a comparable sash size if possible. Ask about the proposed rollers or hinges, locking, handles and safe cleaning access. Keep tracks clear of building debris during finishing work and obtain care instructions at handover.
Glass and frame selection must suit the dimensions and the building’s requirements. A photograph of another balcony is inspiration, not a complete specification for yours.
Compare sliding doors and casement doors. Send the opening dimensions, floor, exposure and location through Astrapia’s enquiry form for a project-specific proposal.
