uPVC Window Installation: A Homeowner’s Handover Checklist

Check opening identification, sash operation, seals, drainage, glass and installation documents before accepting your new uPVC windows.

Installation is the point where the specification becomes part of your building. A short, organised handover helps everyone identify outstanding work while the installer is still on site. Keep your approved opening schedule and quotation available.

Before installation begins

Confirm the opening IDs against the delivered units and agree where materials will be stored. Discuss protection for floors and furniture, access to each opening and the order of work. If existing frames are being removed, agree who is responsible for repairs around the new frames.

Do not rely on the new window to correct an unresolved building leak. If the wall, lintel or waterproofing detail needs attention, have the responsible contractor assess it before closing the junction.

Check each opening, one at a time

  • Compare the supplied system, colour, glass and opening direction with the approved schedule.
  • Open and close each sash and operate every handle and lock.
  • Look for obvious glass damage and surface damage under normal viewing conditions.
  • Check the mesh arrangement and safe cleaning access.
  • Ask the installer to explain the drainage paths and demonstrate the parts that need cleaning.
  • Inspect the visible perimeter finish and list any gaps or unfinished work for correction.

Ask for a care demonstration

Learn which fittings need routine attention and which adjustments should be handled by a technician. Obtain product-specific advice for cleaners and lubricants. The care routine may differ between a sliding track, a hinge and a particular decorative finish.

If operation feels stiff, report it during the handover instead of forcing the handle. Ask the installer to inspect the cause and demonstrate correct use.

Keep a simple snag list

Record the opening ID, a photograph, the issue, who will address it and the agreed follow-up date. Examples include unfinished wall repairs, a missing accessory or an operating adjustment. A precise record is more useful than a general note that a room is “not complete”.

Documents to retain

Keep the final invoice, approved specification, care instructions, written warranty and service contact together. Clarify what is covered for the profiles, glass, hardware and installation rather than assuming one term applies equally to every component.
