uPVC windows can form part of a quieter room, but “uPVC” is not an acoustic rating. Glass, frame construction, opening seals, vents and the junction with the wall work together. A product that suits a quiet courtyard may not be the right specification for a bedroom facing buses or construction.
Describe the noise before choosing the glass
Tell the supplier which room is affected, where the noise comes from and when it is most disruptive. Share photographs of the opening and nearby vents. If the requirement is demanding, discuss an acoustic assessment rather than choosing solely from a glass thickness or a marketing claim.
Double glazing is not a complete acoustic specification
Pane arrangement and glass type matter. Specialist acoustic laminated glass is designed for noise control; glass manufacturer Pilkington describes this in its noise-control product guidance. Ask for the proposed glass build-up in writing, its compatibility with the frame and the evidence supporting the specified performance. A glass-only result should not be presented as the measured result of your finished room.
Follow the potential leakage paths
- Is the closing seal continuous around the sash?
- Does the lock close the sash evenly?
- How will the frame-to-wall gap be finished?
- Are there vents or another opening in the same wall?
- Does the room have other noise paths that new windows will not address?
Set a realistic brief
Ask the supplier what improvement the proposed assembly is intended to achieve and what assumptions that depends on. Avoid accepting a percentage reduction without a stated test method or a promise of complete silence. A showroom demonstration is useful for operating feel, but it is not a measurement of your room.
Before installation, record the existing condition of the opening. At handover, check operation, sealing and any unfinished perimeter work. Keep the agreed glass and hardware specification with the warranty documents so that later service work uses the correct components.
Plan ventilation too
A closed window and an open window serve different purposes. Discuss when you will ventilate the room and whether the building has another ventilation provision. Choose a solution that works for daily use rather than only for a closed-window demonstration.
