Windows for West-Facing Indian Rooms: Glass, Shade and Comfort

Plan west-facing windows by considering external shade, solar heat gain, daylight and the complete glazing specification.

A bright west-facing room can become uncomfortable in the late afternoon. Replacing the frame is only one part of the decision. The amount of glass, the sun falling on it, external shade and the glazing specification all deserve attention.

Map the room before choosing a system

Photograph the window and the view outside at the time the room feels hottest. Note existing overhangs, nearby buildings, balcony slabs and curtains. Tell the supplier how the room is used and whether maintaining a clear view or reducing glare matters most.

An identical window installed under a deep verandah and on an exposed facade can face very different conditions. Start from the opening’s actual setting.

Understand the two different questions

Insulation and solar heat gain describe different aspects of a window. U-factor concerns heat transfer; SHGC describes the fraction of solar energy admitted. The US Department of Energy window guide explains these terms. Use them to ask better questions, not to copy a specification from a different climate.

Request information for the proposed window assembly and glass, and ask the supplier to explain the basis of any performance claim. Neither tinted appearance nor the phrase “double glazed” gives you all the necessary information.

Balance daylight with glare control

Discuss the appearance of the glass from inside and outside. Ask to view a sample in daylight rather than relying on a small digital swatch. Consider how the choice affects the room’s colours and your view, as well as the facade.

Where the design permits it, discuss shading with your architect. Window orientation, shade, glazing and ventilation should form one brief. A frame upgrade cannot substitute for every other part of room design.

Questions for your proposal

  • What glass build-up is proposed and why?
  • What information supports the thermal and solar-control claims?
  • Does the proposed sash support that glass safely?
  • How will the room ventilate when needed?
  • What shade is already present, and what additional shade is feasible?

Avoid accepting a fixed electricity-saving percentage without a stated assessment for your home. Actual energy use depends on the rest of the building and how the room is operated.
